Bodies of 33 fallen Australian service personnel begin their journey home to Australia.

The remains of 33 Australian service personnel and dependents that lost their lives in the Vietnam War are finally being returned to their families in Australia - half a century after they died.

Their bodies will be repatriated this week, after being interred in cemeteries in Malaysia and Singapore. It is one of the largest, single military repatriations in the country’s history.

The returning Australians include 21 veterans, three servicemen and eight dependents who had been interred at Terendak Military Cemetery in Malaysia.

The single other casualty of the Vietnam War will return from the Kranji Military Cemetery in Singapore.

“The return of these Australians will bring closure to their families who have grieved for lost loved ones,” Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said.

“They will be welcomed home with a respectful and dignified return to this country.

After a memorial service, they'll be carried in a procession with a Guard of Honour from Richmond Air Force Base through to Parramatta in Sydney's west.
